Electronic files in perpetuity

The archiving of millions of dusty files in nearly endless basement shelves can become a thing of the past as soon as a secure digital archiving system exists that stores electronic documents with signature legally secure and reliably over decades. However, the requirements concerning security, confidentiality and protection from manipulation are very great thereby. The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) has within the scope of the ArchiSafe project developed a protection profile for the first time that provides software developers in companies and authorities with a catalogue of security requirements with which they can develop their own archiving solutions. The protection profile, unique nationwide up to now, was tested and approved according to Common Criteria by the Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) (Federal Office for Information Security) – a respective certificate will be presented to Dr. Siegfried Hackel, representing the ArchiSafe team, on November 12, 2008 within the scope of a joint colloquium of BSI and PTB.
