Dr.-Ing. Prof. h. c. Frank Härtig, Vice President of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), assumed the presidency of the International Measurement Confederation (IMEKO) on 3 September 2021. Over the next three years, he will spearhead this non-governmental federation of 42 member organizations concerned with the worldwide advancement of measurement technology. Härtig's appointment to his new post came during the 2021 edition of the IMEKO World Congress, which was held digitally this year.

Advanced measurement technology is essential for economic development and cutting-edge research. And overcoming the challenges that lie ahead — global digitalization, the reorganization of our energy supply, climate change mitigation or future quantum technologies — cannot be met without having reliable measurement techniques at our disposal. This is why IMEKO has since 1958 been working to foster interchange between scientists and engineers with the aim of enhancing international collaboration in the field of measurement technology.

Since 2018, Frank Härtig has as president-elect of IMEKO coordinated the organization's 25 technical committees dedicated to various specialized aspects of measurement technology. His duties furthermore include organizing the upcoming 2024 IMEKO World Congress in Hamburg, which hopes to again welcome large numbers of on-site participants for personal, face-to-face interchange.
