A new dome for PTB Berlin

A Charlottenburg architectural monument, the PTB observatory will be renovated

18.03.2009

Old and new most beautifully combined: The result of the architectural competition shows how that can be accomplished. More than sixty years after the Second World War, the dome, which was destroyed in the war, is returned to the oldest and most antique building in the Institute Berlin of the PTB - and in fact to a large extent in the style of 1887, which is as it should be for this building under historical preservation. In contrast, the new infrastructure building appears to be very modern; this will be largely sunk into the ground directly in front of the old part and carefully inserted into the historically preserved ensemble of the old building. Placed here will be, among other things, the operator's room for the adjacent, also underground, modern magnetic resonance tomograph of PTB. Thus, the plans of the architects Christian Huber and Joachim Staudt, who had won the realization competition last year, will now be implemented. It is intended to start with the construction of the extensive renovation work - which also includes renewal of the facade as well as the provision of technical equipment inside of the building - the beginning of April.
