11. Flow Measurands

Peter Reinshaus

The Technical Committee ʺFlow Measurandsʺ was founded in March 2007 and is thus one of the youngest DKD Technical Committees. It represents approximately 25 accredited calibration laboratories for the measurands ʺflow rate of gases and liquidsʺ and ʺflow velocityʺ.

The Committee’s activities focus on:

  • the realisation of interlaboratory comparisons among the member laboratories
  • informing its members about innovations/developments in the field of calibration - by PTB staff - as well as in the field of accreditation (by representatives of DakkS)
  • the development of calibration guidelines serving as basis for identical approaches and comparability of calibration results

Currently, the Technical Committee is conducting an interlaboratory comparison for flow calibrations with the medium water at room temperature.

For this purpose, general rules regarding its realisation as well as a table containing the possible measuring ranges of the participants have been set up. PTB has assumed the role of pilot laboratory and will also support the evaluation of the comparison. The necessary transfer standards were either provided by the participants or jointly acquired.

The latter are to be stored at PTB after completion of the measurements for similar comparisons in the future. In addition, the Working Group ʺFlow Velocityʺ has addressed the question of comparability of calibration conditions in the calibration of anemometers by carrying out a comparison measurement among the corresponding calibration laboratories.

A guideline on thermal energy measurement is also being prepared. Another topic is the international comparability of accreditations in terms of technical aspects. In cooperation with PTB and DAkkS, the Technical Committee aims to ensure further harmonisation of the comparability.
