International Affairs

If two people want to communicate with each other, they ought to speak the same language. In the scientific-technical world, measurement results represent such a language. Thus, a measuring system which is uniform throughout the world is indispensable, especially in these times of globalization. Worldwide uniformity is however achieved only through practical cooperation and a great number of confidence-building measures. PTB's international tasks thus include participating in various metrological organizations as well as cooperating with National Metrology Institutes all over the world, and giving practical aid in setting up the metrological infrastructure of developing countries and countries in transition. Various international agreements are milestones on the way towards international uniformity.

For a long time, PTB has been successfully involved in European committees, aiming to put the metrology of all countries on a common basis. The most important organization in this field is WELMEC. For several years the metrology institutes have also pooled their strength in the field of research – coordinated by EURAMET e. V. and supported by the European Union.

PTB is represented on several hundred standardization committees and, what is more, in all the significant metrology organizations.
