Ion trap of the “Opticlock” project

In trapped-ion quantum computers, light particles (photons) serve to read out the information stored in the ion qubits. Conventional ion traps are equipped with electrodes for generating the trap potential and with separate components for photon detection. With this novel PTB concept, these two components are being combined into an integrated unit for the first time. (Technology Offer 532)

Advantages

ncreased integration density of ion traps

simplified setup of ion traps

spatially resolved in-situ photon detection of several ions is possible
