Aufbau der transportablen optischen Uhr

A European collaboration involving clock experts from the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) and the Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (INRIM) has used PTB's transportable optical atomic clocks to measure gravitation for the first time. The results of the experiment were published in Opens external link in new windowNature Physics.

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is known for providing time e.g. for radio-controlled clocks. For this purpose, it operates some of the best cesium atomic clocks in the world. At the same time, PTB is already developing various atomic clocks of the next generation. These clocks are no longer based on a microwave transition in cesium, but they rather operate with other atoms that are excited using optical frequencies. Some of these new clocks can even be transported to other locations. At its QUEST Institute, PTB is currently developing a transportable optical aluminum clock in order to measure physical phenomena (such as the red shift that was predicted by Einstein) outside a laboratory. A prerequisite for this is that the required lasers are able to endure transportation to other locations. PTB physicists have therefore developed a frequency-doubling unit that will even continue to operate when it has been shaken at...

The International System of Units (SI) is being fundamentally revised. The foremost expert committee in the world of metrology, the International Committee for Weights and Measures (Comité international des poids et mesures, CIPM), issued its fundamental recommendation for this development at its recently concluded annual assembly. It is hoped that, at their general conference in November 2018, the international community of signatories to the Metre Convention will heed the experts’ advice and provide the physical units with an especially firm foundation – one that consists of the set values of selected fundamental constants. The seven base units will thereby lose their prominent role. Instead, seven fundamental constants will be determined as defining reference entities from which all units can be derived.

SI-Grafik (BIPM)

This revolution has been a long time in the making. Behind it are metrologists working in their scientific laboratories, and scientific managers in their decision-making committees. Now the moment is approaching when many of the old quantities (specifically, the definitions behind them) will have to step down to make way for their successors, who are waiting in the wings. The quantities concerned are the kilogram, the mole, the ampere and the kelvin. The foremost expert committee in the world of metrology, the International Committee for Weights and Measures (Comité international des poids et mesures, CIPM), issued its unequivocal recommendation for this development at its recently concluded annual assembly. It is hoped that, at their general conference next year, the international community of signatories to the Metre Convention will heed the experts’ advice and provide the physical units with an especially firm foundation – one that...

The search goes on. No difference in protons and antiprotons have yet been found which would help to potentially explain the existence of matter in our universe. However, physicists in the BASE collaboration at the CERN research center have been able to measure the magnetic force of antiprotons with almost unbelievable precision. Nevertheless, the data do not provide any information about how matter formed in the early universe as particles and antiparticles would have had to completely destroy one another. The most recent BASE measurements revealed instead a large overlap between protons and antiprotons, thus confirming the Standard Model of particle physics. Around the world, scientists are using a variety of methods to find some difference, regardless of how small. The matter-antimatter imbalance in the universe is one of the hot topics of modern physics.

Pressemitteilung der PTB und BBR

Berlin.
