Doctoral candidate specializing in physics, information technology, engineering science (22-287-5) Tuesday, 19. July 2022

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

With a starting date as soon as possible, Department 5.1, Surface Metrology, is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at our Braunschweig site for a duration of three years:

Doctoral candidate specializing in
physics, information technology, engineering science

Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %) ○ fixed-term contract

At the Surface Metrology Department, an industry-oriented and thus application-related research is conducted. We support the technological development of machine parts, optical components and medical products and develop methods for characterizing and evaluating surface textures in order to optimize friction, wear, flow properties, haptics or and the optical appearances. Measurement strategies and statistical methods for the analysis of measured surface textures are continuously being developed.

Your tasks:

Within the scope of an industrial cooperation project, comprehensive studies are to be carried out on specific component series, and we are advancing the development and optimization of the procedures for precision processing of surfaces. These tasks require a quantitative understanding of the measurement processes for the determination of surface quality. Your work will focus on:

  • The development of statistical and signal-theoretical methods for the analysis of measuring data
  • The development of models for the description of the different topographies of specific components; investigating the measurability, separability, and description of various character components such as roughness and waviness along with the measurement uncertainty which can be achieved on measurement objects depending on optical and topographical properties; the generation of synthetic surface textures for use in simulating measurement processes
  • The further development of optical calibration procedures based on 3D micro-standards and the preparation of a measurement uncertainty budget
  • The development and implementation of analytical and modeling software for texture measurements and 3D calibration procedures
  • Collaborating with other organizations within the framework of industrial and university project partnerships
  • Writing project reports and compiling documentation to be used as instruction manuals; presenting results at meetings and conferences, preparing scientific publications

Your profile:

  • You have completed your university studies (master’s degree or German Diplom) in physics, information technologies or engineering sciences and have obtained a “very good” grade
  • You have knowledge of and experience in the following fields:

    • Statistics for data processing
    • Systems theory, signal processing
    • Developing software

  • You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills
  • You are fluent in both spoken and written German and English

We offer:

  • A position at one of the world’s leading research institutions with an excellent infrastructure
  • Intensive PhD supervision in an interdisciplinary team
  • Innovative concepts for the metrology of the future
  • Outstanding national and international networking
  • Remuneration in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Public Service covering federal employees (Tarifvertrag öffentlicher Dienst Bund – TVöD)
  • Various workplace health and wellness options
  • Good transport connections (bus and bike); a subsidy towards the cost of your public transport ticket for the Braunschweig Region (Job-Abo); free parking
