The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

 

With a starting date as soon as possible, Department 3.5, Explosion Protection in Energy Technology, and Department 8.4, Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis, are looking for a candidate to fill the following position at our Braunschweig site for a duration of three years:

 

 

PhD student in CFD and Machine Learning
Remuneration Group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %) ○ fixed-term contract

 

 

Your tasks:

Working Groups 3.51 and 8.41 simulate flows for various metrological applications. Your doctoral research will support both groups with the following tasks:

  • Performing highly-resolved, multidisciplinary CFD simulations using OpenFOAM
  • The prediction of flow profiles through machine learning
  • The simulation of flows relevant to explosion protection
  • Implementing new models in OpenFOAM
  • Publishing and presenting research results in scientific journals and at international conferences

 

 

Your profile:

  • You have completed your university studies (master’s or German Diplom) in an engineering discipline, applied mathematics or a similar field and have obtained a “very good” grade.
  • You have a very good knowledge of CFD simulations.
  • Experience of OpenFOAM is of advantage.
  • You have good programming skills (e.g. Python).
  • Ideally, you have knowledge of and experience in machine learning.
  • You have a very good command of both spoken and written English.
  • You are highly motivated and committed.
  • You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills.
  • You are able to work independently and responsibly.
  • You are willing to travel frequently to Berlin, to other parts of Germany and also abroad within the scope of your assignment.
