Scientific collaborator specializing in the field of fiber-optic time and frequency transmission (21-376-4) Monday, 1. November 2021

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

With a starting date as soon as possible, Department 4.3, Quantum Optics and Unit of Length, is looking for a candidate to fill the following position at our Braunschweig site for a duration of three years:

Scientific collaborator specializing in the field of
fiber-optic time and frequency transmission

up to Remuneration Group 14 TVöD Bund ○ full-time (39 hours/week) ○ fixed-term contract

You will be given the opportunity to obtain a doctorate. For doctoral candidates, the remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund 85 %.

Your tasks:

Within the scope of the joint research project titled “Quantenrepeater.Link – QR.X”, PTB is participating in setting up a quantum repeater test link between PTB in Braunschweig and Leibniz University Hannover to transmit data encrypted by means of quantum cryptography. Your work will focus on:

  • Adapting an existing optical fiber link for time and frequency for the demonstration of an in-field quantum repeater link while maintaining the time and frequency transmission properties
  • Implementing suitable frequency filters that allow the simultaneous transmission of entangled photons and optical reference frequencies with no mutual interference
  • Investigating environmental influences on fiber-optic transmission as well as the necessary stabilization mechanisms
  • Characterizing and operating a transmission link for time and frequency with a timing jitter < 100 ps for averaging periods < 1 h and an optical carrier frequency with a relative frequency instability sy(1s) < 5 x 10-15
  • Demonstrating the lack of mutual interference between time and frequency signals and single-photon transmission.
  • Stable and scalable transmission of Telekom photons over a test link

Your profile:

  • You have successfully completed your university studies (German Diplom or master's) in physics or a comparable subject and obtained the grade very good – and optionally a doctorate
  • You have very good knowledge of laser technology, laser spectroscopy, optics or related technologies
  • You have a sound knowledge in the field of signal transmission via optical fibers
  • A sound knowledge of the fields of quantum cryptography and quantum cryptographic test links would be an advantage
  • You are a strong team player with excellent communication skills
  • You are highly committed with very good organizational skills and an ability to improvise
  • You are willing and able to plan and perform experiments in a laboratory
  • You have a good command of both spoken and written German and English

We offer:

  • A position at one of the world’s leading research institutions which has an excellent infrastructure
  • Intensive supervision in an interdisciplinary team
  • Research in one of the leading groups in this field
  • Excellent national and international networks – e.g. our working group is linked to the “QuantumFrontiers” Cluster of Excellence
  • Compatibility of work and family life (flexible working hours and part-time schemes)
  • Remuneration in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement for the public service (Tarifvertrag öffentlicher Dienst Bund – TVöD for the federal level)
  • Various workplace health and wellness options
  • Good transport connections (bus and bike); free parking
