The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.


In Department 4.3, Quantum Optics and Unit of Length, of Division 4, we are looking for a


doctoral candidate specializing in physics or a comparable subject
in the research field of optical clocks


to join us as soon as possible.

This position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site.

The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %).

 

Your tasks:

Your tasks will include developing and applying a cryogenic optical lattice clock. With a relative measurement uncertainty of 10-18, the clock can be used to perform fundamental physical tests, for example on Einstein's equivalence principle or on a temporal and spatial variation of fundamental constants.

The activities will take place within the scope of the Collaborative Research Centre 1227 DQmatand of the Excellence Cluster 2123 QuantumFrontiers.

 

Your profile:

  • You have completed university studies (Master's or German Diplom) in physics or a comparable subject with the grade "very good"
  • You have experience in the fields of quantum optics, laser cooling, laser spectroscopy or related subjects
  • You have a good knowledge of nuclear physics
  • You are interested in developing and realizing spectroscopic precision experiments
  • You have a good command of both spoken and written German and English
  • You are a team player with excellent communication skills
  • Your qualifications enable you to carry out scientific work autonomously with great commitment, and you are willing to further improve your skills
  • You have to be physically able to perform laboratory work
