doctoral candidate (20-306-5)Tuesday, 18. August 2020

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

In Department 5.5, Scientific Instrumentation, of Division 5, we are looking for a

doctoral candidate

to join us as soon as possible.

This position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site.

The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %).

The Scientific Instrumentation Department is responsible for designing and manufacturing measuring instruments and test setups needed for the demanding tasks of PTB's departments and within the scope of projects. These devices are usually unique and are not commercially available with their precise specifications. They also have to comply with very strict requirements in terms of accuracy and long-term stability.

These measuring instruments and test setups often require a well-defined temperature. We are therefore looking for new possibilities to realize temperature-regulated systems while taking the concrete application (such as under vacuum or high pressure) into account, which is a particular challenge.

Your tasks:

  • Describing the state of the art, also taking PTB's diverse approaches into account
  • Determining the parameter field to be considered with regard to the chamber size, the adjustable temperature, the temperature constancy, and the metrological and control aspects – taking PTB's requirements into account
  • Applying the developed knowledge to special components in metrology or to setting up test arrangements and measuring instruments
  • Analyzing and documenting the results and presenting them in publications and at international congresses

Your profile:

  • You have completed university studies (Master's or German Diplom) in mechanical engineering, physics, electrical engineering or a comparable subject with the grade good.
  • You are familiar with the field of precision metrology or with the designing processes in scientific instrumentation.
  • You are interested in dealing with tasks requiring you to solve problems at the limit of what is technically feasible.
  • You are highly committed, capable of working autonomously and willing to improve your skills.
  • You are a team player with excellent communication skills.
  • You have a very good command of both written and spoken German and English.
  • You have to be physically able to perform laboratory work on the experiment at hand.
