a post-doctoral or a doctoral candidate in the field of chemistry with a focus on physical chemistry or in the field of natural/engineering sciences with a focus on physical chemistry or safety engineering (19-108-3)Wednesday, 25. September 2019

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

Department 3.7 "Fundamentals of Explosion Protection" of Division 3 is looking for

a post-doctoral or a doctoral candidate in the field of chemistry with a focus on physical chemistry or in the field of natural/engineering sciences with a focus on physical chemistry or safety engineering

The duration of the position is limited to 2 years, for doctoral candidates to 3 years. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site.

The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund for postdocs (85 % for doctoral candidates).

Your tasks:

You will examine the effectiveness of flame arresters against detonations and conduct fundamental examinations of detonation processes within the scope of a third-party-funded research project (collaboration with industry/research institutes).

Flame arresters in gas-conveying systems prevent the passage of explosions from one part of a facility to another. This prevents immediate and major injuries to persons or damage to facilities caused by an ignition. In order to ensure the efficiency of the flame arresters, they must be subjected to a type approval process. This process essentially depends on the type of the anticipated explosions and on the conditions under which such explosions occur. It will, therefore, be the key objective of your tasks to gain insights about the effects of non-atmospheric conditions on the progressing of the explosions in pipelines and to use these insights to develop reliable and safe testing procedures. By involving project partners in the standardization process, research contributes directly to the safety of processes with explosive substances.

  • Developing a standardizable procedure for the examination of the resistance of detonation flame arresters at non-atmospheric conditions, planning and implementing the experiments;
  • Dealing with scientific questions concerning ignition processes and the progressing of the explosion;
  • Presenting the results within the project team and at conferences as well as in the form of written publications;

Your profile:

  • You have completed university studies (Master's or German Diplom) of chemistry with a focus on physical chemistry or studies of natural/engineering sciences with a focus on physical chemistry or safety engineering.
  • Experience in at least one of the following fields are of advantage:
    o   Developing and operating complex metrological set-ups
    o   Safety-characteristic matters in the field of explosion protection
    o   Investigation of combustion-dynamic processes
    o   Modelling of combustion-dynamic processes
    o   Analyzing complex data (programming skills in Python, Java, Origin)
    o   Automation of measuring set-ups (programming skills in LabView)
  • You are interested in interdisciplinary issues.
  • You are able to work independently; you are highly comitted and focussed.
  • You have excellent communication skills and are a team player.
  • You have an excellent command of spoken and written German.
  • You have a good command of spoken and written English.
  • You are willing to travel within Germany as well as abroad for business purposes, project meetings and measurement campaigns.
