The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science.

In Department 6.1, "Radioactivity", of Division 6, we are looking for a

doctoral candidate

specializing in physics

to join us as soon as possible.

This position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site.

The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %).

Department 6.1, "Radioactivity", produces activity standards for dissemination to customers as well as for its own research and development tasks. Within the scope of the European research project "Measurement of fundamental nuclear decay data using metallic magnetic calorimeters" (EMPIR MetroMMC), a high-resolution spectrometer based on a metallic magnetic calorimeter (MMC) has been operated in collaboration with Department 7.6, "Cryosensors", as well as with the Kirchhoff-Institute for Physics (KIP) of Heidelberg University and external partners; this spectrometer has been used, among other things, to determine electron capture probabilities for a number of radionuclides.


Your tasks:

  • Operating an MMC-based spectrometer with SQUID selection
  • Developing suitable sources for optimized energy resolution
  • Measuring MMC spectra
  • Developing data acquisition and analysis routines
  • Determining fundamental radionuclide data
  • Presenting your results at scientific congresses and in scientific journals


Your profile:

  • You have completed university studies (Master's or German Diplom) of physics and have obtained the grade "very good"
  • You have a good knowledge at least of low-temperature physics or nuclear physics
  • You have good programming skills for data analysis (e.g. in MATLAB, Python or root)
  • Ideally, you are familiar with superconducting detectors
  • Skills in the field of measurement data acquisition by means of digitizers would be of advantage
  • You are willing to work independently and on your own responsibility
  • You are willing to cooperate with other scientists within the scope of a European research project and to write scientific reports
  • You have excellent communication skills and are a team player
  • You are prepared to handle radioactive substances and to work in monitored areas
  • You have an excellent command of English and a good command of German, both spoken and written
