PTB utilizes synchrotron radiation for metrology since 1982, i. e. from the very beginning of the BESSY I storage ring. There, the PTB laboratory offered Europe-wide unique measurement capabilities, used by collaboration partners worldwide. After the BESSY I shut-down, PTB established its laboratory at the BESSY II storage ring, expanding its activities towards photon energies up to 60 keV in the x-ray region. The new MLS adds measurement capacities in the low photon-energy regions, and therefore perfectly complements the continuing activities at BESSY II.

- Storage Rings as primary source standards
- Source-based radiometry
- Cyrogenic radiometers as primary detector standards
- Detector-based radiometry
- EUV reflectometry, scatterometry
- IR and THz radiometry
