Liquid crystals provide a solution to the most difficult problem of eye protection for weldors. Their order changes with lightning speed and they darken the glasses as soon as a sudden light flash strikes the glasses. Welding can be started without interruption conventional dark glasses impeded the accurate positioning of the equipment (and thus were used only very reluctantly). As bright as possible as dark as necessary according to the degree of protection, standards and values have been specified for this tightrope walk. The Imaging Optics and Spectrometry Section of the PTB thoroughly checks compliance with these standards (including scratch resistance and breaking strength) before type approvals for the European market are granted. By the way: There is no standard prescribing that glasses should be ugly...
