According to section §103 of the Radiation Protection Ordinance, which has been valid in Germany since 2001, the exposure of air crews to cosmic radiation must be determined if the dose value of 1 mSv per year may be exceeded. In the case of aircrews in aircraft industry, this limit is generally reached and sometimes even exceeded as a result of their exposure to cosmic radiation. Since 1997, the dose distribution at flight altitudes has been globally measured by PTB. A reference dosimetry system developed by PTB is used to measure the complex radiation field at flight altitudes.
