In-flight dosimetry system

The PTB in-flight dosimetry system ("flight case") has been developed especially for measurements in mixed radiation fields as they occur, for example, at flight altitudes. By means of dosimetry, neutron-, photon-, proton-, electron- and myon radiation could, for example, be determined over a wide energy range. The development also allowed for the special technical requirements for permanent installation in commercial airplanes.

General

Flugkoffer

The dosimetry system was manufactured in 2001 on behalf of PTB by the Freiberger Sensortechnik GmbH (Freiberg, Germany). Radiation detectors and measurement electronics are accommodated in a standard suitcase made of aluminium.

The flight case can be operated for approx. 10 hours with an internal storage battery or without time limit with different external line voltages.

Air pressure, temperature and GPS-Position can be recorded simultaneously with the energy spectra of the radiation detectors.

The data store is sufficient to safe data for several months.

TEPC_CACS_Zeichnung
The determination of the ambient dose equivalent is achieved by using a spherical tissueequivalent proportional counter (TEPC) inside the case. The TEPC simulates a tissue diameterof 4 µm and measures energy dose in that volume. To obtain additional information concerning the radiation type. The TEPC is surrounded by the coincidence detector CACS.

TEPC:

Diameter: 2 inch = 5.08 cm
Tissue equivalent: 4 µm

Producer: PTB Braunschweig
Type: cylindrical multi-wire proportional counter
