The Scientific Instrumentation Section designs and manufactures measuring instruments and test equipment as required for the complex tasks to be carried out by the PTB's specialist sections. As a rule, these instruments are fabricated only once and in this form are not available on the market: They must meet highest requirements as regards precision and long-time stability.
In addition to this, tasks are performed which are not dependent on commissions. Among these are the development and testing of novel technologies as required for solving future tasks such as the machining of materials hard to cut (e.g. silicon single crystals and ceramic materials) and the manufacture and assembly of microcomponents.
To accomplish these tasks, the 80 staff members (employees and trainees) use most recent production technologies and increasingly employ computer-aided system components for the design (CAD and FEM), commission planning and manufacture (CAM).
