2nd Year of Training
Technical Education in:
In the second year, fabrication-related training starts. It no longer takes place in the Training Workshop but in the Precision Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering Shops.
To consolidate and increase the technical and trade skills, the trainees fabricate workpieces on their own, which are intended for production.
The difference between the trades of mechanic and precision mechanic lies in the size and in the dimensional, form and positional tolerances of the workpieces which are mainly produced on machines.
The skills and knowledge to be acquired in the 2nd year of training are:
- Planning and preparation of the operations as well as checking and assessing of the work results
- selection and provision of tools, testing and measuring tools as well as of aids in dependence on the intended use
- determination of the required semifinished products, standard parts and finished parts from technical documents, particularly drawings
- Testing, measurement and gauging
- gauging and measurement of lengths and forms considering dimensional, form and positional tolerances using suitable testing means
- measurement with measuring instruments up to an
accuracy of 0,005 mm
- testing of parts for radial and lateral run-out, detection of unbalances

3rd and 4th Year of Training
The trainees in their third and fourth years of training continue working in the production in the Scientific Instrumentation Section and in the Precision Mechanics Shop.
In contrast to the 2nd year of training, not only single components are fabricated but also subassemblies are assembled and disassembled.

Skills and specialist knowledge to be acquired in the third and fourth year of training:
- ultraprecision machining (flat grinding and cylindrical grinding)
- identification and location of errors and failures; repair of machines, systems or their components
- programming of numerically controlled machine tools
- fabrication of workpieces on numerically controlled machine tools
- testing and setting of functions on machine tools
