Artefacts and methods to establish traceability of large coordinate measuring machines(EC SM&T funded project MESTRAL)Within the framework of this project, L-shaped ball plate reference objects with metrological properties more or less identical to those of conventional ball plates are developed. The new reference objects are dismountable so that even plates of large dimensions (up to 3m x 1,5 m) can be transported and handled without difficulties. Additionally new dismountable linear reference objects like ball bars are developed (length up to 6 m), which are also evaluated for the straigthness transversal to the linear (rod) axis. The main construction material of the new reference objects are carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP). These reference objects are put into action in a series of pilot measurements on large coordinate measuring machines of different types and from different manufacturers in order to determine large CMM error functions.
