| A minute with 61 seconds
After three years it happened again in the New Year’s night of 2009 that a leap second had to be introduced into Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and thus also into the legal times in all countries. Leap seconds serve the purpose to adjust atomic time in a way that UTC agrees with mean solar time at longitude zero (Greenwich Observatory), called UT1, within one second. The figure (see below) displays the difference between both time scales since 2005, including the latest leap second.
