Dosimetry of non-ionizing radiation for the field exposition of biological samples

In cooperation with research partners field exposition experiments of biological samples in a µTEM cell are conducted. Here, the influence of high frequency fields with defined field strength on the development of suitable cell lines are studied. A detailed computer model allows for the determination of the specific absorption rates of the test samples.

First results concerning the effects of electromagnetic radiation have been published in the scientific journal "Biolelectromagnetics" (Spindle Disturbances in Human-Hamster Hybrid (AL) Cells Induced by Mobile Communication Frequency Range Signals). Further experiments that help to clarify the question how pulsed mobile communication signals influence biological cells are planned. A vector signal generator allows to synthesize any forms of modulation used in today’s communication devices.

The group also works on examining the effects of exposition of cell lines to Terahertz radiation. In the project "Gene toxic effects of Terahertz radiation in vitro" initiated by the BfS – Federal Office for Radiation Protection field exposition experiments with skin cell lines are conducted at PTB.

In the project "Traceable measurement of field strength and SAR for the Physical Agents Directive" funded by the European Union PTB among other things works on open questions regarding the better quantification of energy application to biological matter.
