Room Acoustics
Musical Acoustics
This is the science of the link between music
and acoustics, the performance of music from an acoustical point of view and the acoustics
of musical instruments, their function, playing technique and the sound radiation.
Besides general physical investigations the development of reproducible measuring methods
is the main goal. Measurements better be done without the inconsistent influence of
musicians otherwise a high number of repetitions is required. But the role of the musician
cannot be ignored because the physical parameters alone do not reflect the musical quality
of an instrument completely. In subjective tests the quality relevant parameters are
determined and the relationship between objective and subjective results enables detailed
proposals for the instrument maker to improve the instruments.
The working group 1.73 "room acoustics" is the former Laboratory of Musical
Acoustics of the PTB which since 1951 was concerned with tasks in the field of musical
acoustics for 45 years. Therefore the new task on room
acoustics includes the results of the former work in the field of musical acoustics,
especially the sound radiation of musical instruments.
Example: Modal analysis of a historical cembalo
--> Directivities
of musical instruments to describe sources in room simulation programs
