After the specified tests have been carried out, the section grants type approvals for the following measuring instruments for use in traffic control, which are subject to mandatory verification:

• Instruments for speed control
• Traffic light camera
• Instruments for speed- and distance control based on analysis of video (VKS)
• Stop watches (when used for official measurements)
• Taximeter und odometers
• Decelerometers (used by TÜV (Technical Control Board), etc.)
• Instruments for testing chronotachographs

Another important task is research in the field of measuring instruments used for traffic control purposes, in particular the development of reference instruments for speed measurements.

A third field of work covers consultancy services offered to judges, experts, lawyers and citizens concerning the regulations for measuring instruments used in traffic control and, if required, the delivery of decisive expert opinions.
