- Maintenance of the National Prototype of the Kilogram
and realization of the unit of mass, the kilogram
- Dissemination of the unit
of mass by verification and calibration of weights and mass standards
in the range from 1 mg to 5000 kg
- Research and development on the field of mass determination
- Cooperation with national and international organizations
- Participation in national and international comparison measurements
- Expert activity for the German Calibration Service (DKD)
- Training and advicing with the set-up and
development of mass laboratories in other metrological institutes
as part of the technical cooperation
- Calibration and approval of devices for the bulk density measurement of cereals
In the frame of research and development,
the following topics are covered:
- Experimental determination of the air density
by weighing specially designed buoyancy artefacts in vacuum
and in air
- Investigation on convection influences
on the weighing process
- Investigation of the magnetic properties
of mass standards and weighing instruments and of the corresponding
interactions
- Investigation on the influences of sorption
and cleaning and on the long term stability of mass standards
