Work Packages

The project is organized in six technical workpackages (WPs), supported by one additional WP for the management, coordination and dissemination tasks.

Detailed project plans by work package

WP1 will develop magnetic stray field reference materials that generate a well-defined, calculable, spatially varying magnetic stray field. The stray field feature sizes will span a range from 250 μm down to below 10 nm to enable overlapping calibrations of different measurement methods with different spatial resolution. Numerical modelling will be used to calculate the 3D stray field distribution of these reference materials. Furthermore the responses to the reference stray magnetic fields of the three different measurement techniques established in WP2-WP4 will be simulated taking into account the properties and size of the magnetic field sensor.

In WP2-WP4 the metrology infrastructure for the three most relevant high resolution field measurement techniques (Scanning field microscopy, MOIF, MFM) will be established and reliable high resolution field calibration tools and algorithms will be developed. The calibration tools and algorithms will be evaluated by comparison to the measurement models developed in WP1 and their uncertainty and minimum resolution will be analysed.

In WP5 the new calibrations tools and methods established in WP2-WP4 will be validated by a round robin comparison of the three measurement methods using the stray field reference samples developed in WP1. External stakeholders have expressed interest in participation in the comparison. The reference samples will span a broad range of length scales from above 100 μm down to <10 nm, which will enable the resolution of the different measurements to be validated and will allow a traceable calibration chain of high resolution field measurements from macroscopic SI standards down to the nano-scale to be established. Based on these validations Guidelines for nano-scale field measurements will be drafted and reference materials for traceable high resolution magnetic stray field calibrations will be identified and described.

WP6 will generate impact by disseminating the project outcomes to the stakeholders e.g. by publication of guidelines and standards, access to open source calibration software and calibration services, publication of papers, training sessions, presentations at conferences and workshops, among others.

A large stakeholder network is linked to the project comprising measurement system companies, sensor companies, international NMIs, EU research networks, stakeholder networks, academic groups and standardisation organisations. These stakeholders will provide input on end-user requirements for the definition of technical measurement parameters and system specifications.
