230th PTB Seminar
Conductivity and salinity - Leitfähigkeit und Salinität
Content
Salinity is one of the most important quantities of oceanographic models. The distribution of density inside the ocean is directly related to the distribution of ocean currents. Temperature, salinity and pressure are used to calculate density.
It is not possible to measure the absolute salinity directly. The Practical Salinity Scale PSS-78 forms the basis of an international accepted method for calculating the salinity from conductivity measurements. The practical salinity is defined as the ratio of the electrical conductivity of seawater to that of a defined potassium chloride solution at 15 °C.
The objective of the EUROMET project 918 "Study on the traceability of salinity measurements in seawater" was a first investigation of the agreement in conductivity measurement results for the practical salinity determination.
The aims of the 230th PTB seminar are to:
- Bring together users of seawater data and metrologists
- Provide an overview of the scientific service related to seawater at PTB
- Evaluate the results of the EUROMET project 918
- Identify needs and opportunities for metrology in seawater monitoring
