| Abstract: | A review of NIST's involvement in synchrotron radiation will be given, starting with the early experiments on synchrotron radiation properties performed at the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility SURF III. NIST researchers early on realized the value of synchrotron radiation in optical radiation metrology, which led to a radiometry program similar to that maintained by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Berlin. NIST researchers were also among the pioneers in utilizing synchrotron radiation for atomic physics and later materials research. A short overview over current programs at NIST and the NSLS will be given and in the end the proposed NIST Compact X-ray Source will be introduced. In this talk, we will discuss the principle of this method, examples of stray-light correction for spectroradiometers and imaging instruments, and applications of this technique in radiometry, colorimetry, photometry and many other fields. |
