| Abstract: | Finite spin densities in semiconductors have traditionally been generated by external magnetic fields, by circularly polarized light sources, or by spin injection from ferromagnets. Recently there has been considerable interest in an alternative strategy in which edge spin densities are generated electrically via the spin Hall effect (SHE). This talk will desribe an experiment which utilizes a light emitting transistor to detect an electrically induced edge spin accumulation. Its co-planar geometry and the strong spin-orbit coupling in the embedded two-dimensional hole gas are well suited for inducing and detecting the SHE. When an electric field is applied across the hole layer, a non-zero out-of-plane component of the spin is optically detected whose sign depends on the sign of the field and is opposite for the two edges, consistent with theory predictions. | |
