PTB closely cooperates with a large number of industrial firms, one focal point at present being the field of nanotechnology. PTB has joined three out of six competence centres for nanotechnology supported by the State: 

Competence Centre"Ultraprecise Surface Figuring" (CC UPOB)

It is the concern of ultraprecise engineering practice to manufacture bodies and surfaces of macroscopic dimensions with microscopic precision – that is to say, with extreme accuracy. The Competence Centre “Ultraprecise Surface Figuring”, whose Executive Office is domiciled at PTB, supports its members in all problems which arise in this context. It has been divided into four areas of core competence:

• Mechanical/chemical processing methods
• Ion beam and plasma processing methods
  
• Optical processing methods and related topics
  
• Metrological characterization of surfaces

Closely related with the above are the following three supplementary areas:

• Optical and X-ray optical layers
  
• Ultraprecise 3D structuring
  

• Nano-positioning and nano-measurement

Center of Competence in Nano-Scale Analysis (CNN) The supraregional Center of Competence in Nano-Scale Analysis links up core competences in the field of nano-scale

analysis available at different sites in Germany. This makes an efficient acquisition of basic knowledge possible and allows know-how in the field of nanotechnology to be transformed more rapidly into products, production methods and services. The CCN has three coordination centers in Hamburg, Munich and Muenster as well as many cooperation partners in Germany.
