The international tasks of the PTB cover cooperation in the many different metrology organizations and with national metrology institutes all over the world on the one hand and practical support for setting up a metrological infrastructure in developing and threshold countries on the other hand. In all cases, the same objective is pursued: international harmonization of metrology. In order that men might trade with one another unhindered, one kilogram must be one kilogram everywhere and one metre must be one metre. A great number of measures and regulations must be harmonized so that they comply worldwide. In Europe this harmonization has largely been reached but on the global scale, it has not yet been fully attained. Milestones on this long way are the various international agreements some topical examples of which will be presented in this chapter. Follow the links and discover how the PTB is integrated into the international network of metrology.
