Technology transfer represents a partial aspect of the services PTB renders to economy and society in accordance with the political mandate to interlink science and economy more closely. The increase of technology transfer into the German economy is a goal agreed upon with the BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology). PTB understands technology transfer to mean all activities which lead to economic exploitation of its work results.
Technology transfer has already been in practice for years, e.g. in research cooperations or through patent exploitation.
The following goals serve to further support the German economy:

The exploitation of technologies developed at PTB is effected under customary market conditions. Industrial property rights play a special role. They strengthen the technical and legal position of PTB in cooperations and at the same time grant the licensees investment protection. As proof of the competency of PTB, they are a starting point for future cooperations. They also allow a partial return flow of funds for expenditures financed through public budgets.
Spin-offs constitute a valuable contribution to technology transfer. The PTB advises concerning spin-offs in legal and organizational matters and offers rentals and utilization leases as necessary. Both in the area of spin-offs and also in research cooperations it will be possible in future for staff to work temporarily for outside companies
By increasing the promotion of technology transfer the employees of PTB are to become motivated to concentrate more on the direct economic use of their work.
