The subject area "Length and Dimensional Metrology" deals with the tasks resulting from the mandate according to the Units and Time Act, the Measures and Verification Act and the European Measuring Instruments Directive (MID) 2004/22/EC on the realization, maintenance and dissemination of the SI unit "length" and the dimensional measurands derived from it:
Development and provision of frequency-stabilized lasers as national standards or as secondary frequency standards which are used in optical interference comparators and interferometers for the realization and dissemination of the Si unit "length"
Further development of interferential metrology for the realization of the length of prismatic bodies (in particular gauge blocks) and of the volume of spheres as well as for geodetic length measurements
Development and application of measurement procedures carried out on length graduations used for the dissemination of the unit of length. Characterizations of lattice standards, crystalline lattice parameters, line graduations and incremental length measuring systems and dissemination of angle measurands by means of angle graduations
Development and application of measurement procedures for the dissemination of dimensional measurands on surfaces in different scale ranges and on surface layers
Development and application of measurement procedures for the dissemination of dimensional measurands on objects, components and systems with dimensions ≤ 1 mm and, frequently, high aspect ratios
Development and application of measurement procedures for the dissemination of dimensional measurands on macroscopic measurement objects with dimensions from centimetres to a few 10 meters
Development and application of procedures for the traceable characterization of material properties, using dimensional measurement procedures
