The keyword which has stayed with PTB since its founding in 1887 (at that time: Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt, PTR) is: accuracy. More precisely: measurement accuracy. After a 125-year success story, PTB will be celebrating its anniversary in March 2012 – with a political ceremonial act in the Braunschweiger Stadthalle (Braunschweig Civic Centre) and with a scientific symposium scheduled on the day before. From the beginning, PTR was characterized by a close relationship between science and the economy.
The two “fathers of the PTR” represent this concept: The industrialist Werner von Siemens, who initiated its founding, and the scientist Hermann von Helmholtz, as its first president. This special association also becomes evident on 17 October 2012 in Berlin, when PTB will extend invitations to lectures at the Audimax of the TU Berlin and to the official dedication of its restored Observatory.
We have compiled some important

The 125th anniversary is also reflected in
PTB's publications of 2012. On the occasion of the anniversary, both the "
PTB-Mitteilungen" (the metrological journal of PTB) and the "
maßstäbe" (the popular-science magazine of PTB) focus on special subjects. Furthermore, PTB has had its book series on the
history of the institute reprinted and is making the "classical" experimental physics reference book "Praktische Physik" by Friedrich Kohlrausch available at its website.
*PTB is grateful to Douglas Adams ("The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") for the realization that not every answer (e.g. 42 as the answer to the "Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything") has to please the person asking the question.
