The department performs testing, consulting and research for external and internal customers in those fields of information technology that are of a cross-sectional character in metrology, in particular in legal metrology.

On the other hand, special tasks in the area of gaming machines are addressed.

Software testing is mainly performed in the area of legal metrology, but not restricted to. Furthermore, legal metrology is supported by consulting and special research and development. The testing and type approvals performed for gaming machines are based on national regulations.   

The focus of research and development is mainly derived from the developing needs of legal metrology and of the gaming area.

The department contributes to or even chairs relevant committees on metrology. In the area of legal metrology, these are

• the software committee of the national general assembly of legal metrology (chair),
• the "Software" working group of WELMEC (chair),
• the "Software" subcommittee of OIML (TC5/SC2) (Co-chair).

The department performs consulting and coordination tasks in the relevant fields of activity for external and internal customers. The scope of customers extends from PTB working groups to industry and government. Some of the consulting and coordination tasks have the dimension of projects.
