Development of novel, and improvement of known, optical techniques for medical diagnostics and monitoring of therapy to improve the precision and reliability of such methods. At present, research and development focusses on laser-based analytical methods for biomedical optics and molecular imaging as well as flow-cytometry and quantitative fluorescence microscopy. The analytical techniques and tools developed are employed in oncology, neurology, cardiology and hematology. Having regard to significant progress as well as increased importance for the community, and economic relevance, approaches towards the development of quantitative measuring procedures for applications in molecular medicine and biotechnology are performed.
Furthermore, quality assurance in medical diagnostics is advanced by active collaboration with international and national regulatory boards, by development of standard instrumentation (e.g. flow cytometer for the determination of concentration of blood cells) and by determining reference values for hemograms.
