The department develops measurement and test procedures within the field of medical technology. The main focus is on magnetic resonance imaging.

The "MR technology" group (8.11) develops and improves procedures and equipment for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS). The group "In vivo MRI" (8.13) applies such novel techniques in biomedical studies and tests them in the field. The central research tool is a whole-body 3-tesla MR scanner. Additionally, the department is engaged in the Berlin Ultrahigh Field Facility which is operating a 7-tesla whole body scanner.
