Quantum Optics with Cold Atoms
Working Group 4.32

Tasks

The Working Group deals with the interactions between atoms and radiation in view of potential applications for high-precision measurements and optical atomic clocks with neutral atoms.

Work is performed in cooperation with the Special Research Area 407 at the University of Hannover, the Excellence Cluster QUEST, and the Deutsches Institut für Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik DLR, the European Space Agency ESA.

Focal points of the activities are:

Establishment and operation of an optical lattice clock with strontium atoms

  • Investigation of the frequency shifts by collisions and black-body radiation
  • Preparation of a redefinition of the second

Highly stable laser sources with sub-hertz linewidth

  • Development of highly stable, optical reference resonators insensitive to vibrations.
  • Suppression of the frequency noise of laser diodes

Bose-Einstein condensation of calcium
