Fundamentals of Explosion Protection
Department 3.4

Tasks

Fires and explosions do not occur frequently but can cause disastrous effects. The aim of the staff members of department 3.4 "Fundamentals of Explosion Protection" is to minimise the risk of  harm to persons and damage of properties.

The field of activity includes

  • properties of explosive mixtures as a basis for all explosion prevention and protection measures
  • ignition, flame propagation and combustion processes
  • explosion prevention concepts in process engineering, often at conditions other than atmospheric

The staff members of department 3.4

  • give safety advice to ministries, authorities, employers, mutual insurance associations ("Berufsgenossenschaften") and industry
  • take part in regulatory safety technical committees (for details see committee data base)
  • perform type testing of non-electrical explosion protected equipment as well as autonomous protective systems for use in hazardous areas (as notified body according to directive 94/9/EG)
  • determine safety characteristic data of flammable liquids
  • perform research and development in the field of explosion prevention and protection as a basis for appropriate testing and advice
  • provide advice and information by provision of rated safety data
