The area of tasks of the "Liquid Flow" Department can be summarised in four focal points:
- improving and developing the primary standards for the realisation of the units "mass" and "flowrate" of liquids;
- metrologically ensuring the dissemination of the units up to the end user of the respective measuring instruments;
- performing metrological services competently and efficiently, both for the calibration of high-quality measuring instruments and for approval and certification activities within the scope of the Verification Act, and
- extensive cooperation with industry to develop new measuring and testing techniques and procedures in the field of fluid measurement.
The activities also comprise tasks at the international level within the scope of the respective Technical Committees of the European regional metrology organisations EURAMET e.V. and the Euro-Asian organisation of national metrology institutes COOMET and in CIPM's "Fluid Flow" Working Group. An active cooperation also exists with the national and international regulations and standardisation committees such as DIN, DVGW, OIML, CEN, ISO and WELMEC.
Although each of the three working groups of the Department has a field of responsibility of its own, the transitions are seamless. For the field of research, for example, many approaches result from the activities in the approval and certification area, because it is there where fluid metrology is handled in its entire scope. On the other hand, research results directly enter into the regulation and standardisation activity to formulate requirements for fluid metrology which are in compliance with the state of the art of science and technology as well as with consumer, health and environmental protection.
