The tasks of the "Mass" Department comprise:

• Maintenance of the national prototype of the kilogram No. 52 as well as realization and dissemination of the SI base unit "kilogram" in the range from 1 mg to 5 000 kg (Units and Time Act)
• Testing and pattern approval tests of non-automatic and automatic weighing instruments and weighing instrument modules (Verification Act, Verification Ordinance, 2009/23/EC (NAWID), 2004/22/EC (MID)

• Maintenance of the EEC 20 l standard grain prober and realization and dissemination of the EEC bulk density of grain (Verification Act, Verification Ordinance)
• Collaboration in the Plenary Assembly for Verification Matters
• Collaboration in national and international committees (DIN, CCM, EURAMET, WELMEC, OIML)
• Research and development in the fields "mass" and "weighing technology"
• Support of the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) for the fields "weights" and "weighing instruments"
