Dear Visitors,
You are cordially welcome to the Berlin part of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt!
The Physikalisch-Technische Reichsanstalt (PTR) was founded in 1887 on the Charlottenburg campus at the initiative of Werner von Siemens. Hermann von Helmholtz, who was its first president until his death, resided in a villa on the premises.
Several outstanding personalities of physics worked for the PTR (see
History of PTR/PTB).
Following World War II, the PTB in Braunschweig was founded at the initiative of Max von Laue. Based on an agreement between the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin, in 1953, the PTR merged as the "Berlin Institute" with the PTB located in Braunschweig.
The oldest building on the Charlottenburg campus, the Observatory, is currently being renovated and will shine in new splendour in the anniversary year of 2012.
The doubtlessly most beautiful building, the Hermann von Helmholtz Building, rounds out the premises to the west.
Today, IB is a modern research and service institute for scientific measurement technology, also known as "metrology". It accommodates two of the eight divisions of PTB, with the subjects thermometry, radiometry, medical physics, mathematics and information technology for metrology.
The institute is not only a vital part of the scientific landscape of Berlin, but it also represents und is the showcase of PTB for politics and the public in the federal capital.
Our staff members are pleased to be able to present to you their research, developmental and service tasks for the economy, society and science.
