Tasks of the Working Group Data Networks and Servers Berlin

• Scientific consultation and support in preparing the application of IT techniques and IT system technology
• Configuration and extension of the high-capacity Local Area Network (LAN) at PTB’s Berlin Institute
• Operation and management of the LAN (approx. 1000 nodes), configuration of servers for central network services (acquisition and provision of network metadata)
• Integration of the PTB sites in Berlin-Adlershof (Bessy II and Willy Wien Laboratory)
• Integration into the Virtual Private Network (VPN) of PTB Braunschweig and Berlin
• Linking of the LAN with the Berlin science network BRAIN and the Internet
• Support of the facilities of BRAIN for the cooperation with other scientific institutes and clinics in Berlin
• Maintenance of the LAN infrastructure, cable management, maintenance concept for the active network components of the LAN infrastructure
• Further development of the networking concept, implementation and further development of the IT safety concept (firewalls, virus scan, metadata backup)
• Operation and extension of the telecommunications technology
• Conception, configuration and administration of the scientific and infrastructural application servers (compute servers, database servers, web servers, backup servers)
• Support of the PTB laboratories in solving complex IT problems
• Provision and further development of central services within the LAN (such as file service, back up, mail service, print service and dial-up modems)
• User support and IT hotline services

Tasks of the Working Group PC Hardware and Operating Systems Berlin

• User support in the case of hardware and software problems or problems with the operating systems
• Support in connecting PCs to the LAN
• Maintenance, repair and disposal of PCs
• Provision of spare parts and assistance in warranty cases
• Advice in the procurement of PCs and other IT-components
• Testing and selection of standard hardware components for workstations (“standard PC”)
• Testing and selection of standard software for workstations (“standard image”)
• Provision of standard software; license management
• Support in the conception, configuration and operation of measurement computers
• Organisational management of the hotline and emergency service
